As a member of the LEO SOC Development team, the LEO Satellite Operations Engineering Specialist will provide technical leadership for engineering aspects related to ensuring effective in-orbit operations of all on-board subsystems on the Lightspeed satellite bus, in order to maximize subsystem health, performance and commercial availability.  This includes working, in collaboration, with others within the Satellite Operations team and other Lightspeed segments to improve efficiencies, through innovation, across all facets of in-orbit fleet operations.

Main Responsibilities

  • Supports evaluation of SCS procurement proposals during the procurement phase;
  • Supports Installation, Validation and Verification of SatOps systems;
  • Working collaboratively with the satellite manufacturer, leads the development of satellite operations products within the procured Real Time System (RTS);
  • Ensures comprehensive technical understanding of MDA satellite documentation, satellite operations products and associated satellite subsystems;
  • Supports development of satellite operations concept of operations (CONOPS) for all phases of the Lightspeed mission; including LEOP, IOT, EOR, on-station operations and end-of-life deorbit;
  • Ensures the technical content and design of all operations products used for controlling the Lightspeed constellation are fully validated and adhere to manufacturer and Telesat operational requirements and guidelines;
  • Oversee the creation, coding, modification and maintenance of satellite operating procedures Lead the development of automation for routine and contingency operations and tracking of performance;
  • Design and support effective trending analysis of all satellite subsystems with a view to providing early detection of anomalous behaviors or trends;
  • Assist operations staff with ensuring that all matters pertaining to satellite subsystem health and operation are properly addressed and resolved;
  • Provide technical assistance and/or training on all matters pertaining to the development and use of the satellite operations products and supporting trending and analysis tools.
  • Provide support to GEO Satellite Operations 

Required Education and Experience

  • Masters or Bachelor degree in an Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering, or the equivalent
  • A background in Aerospace technologies and expertise in satellite operations software systems and development
  • 10 years experience in the development of satellite operations products and management of operations of satellite subsystems would be an asset
  • Knowledge of satellite subsystem design and operation
  • Knowledge of electronics, control systems and radio frequency communications
  • Experience in developing software with a variety of platforms and programming tools
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, real-time decision-making, planning and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written English communications skills
  • Independent and self-motivated, with the ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment
  • Knowledge of containerized software platforms is an asset

Decision Making and Supervision

  • Make decisions and recommendations governed by general policy.  Recommendations are reviewed for technical soundness or judgment but are generally accepted as technically accurate
  • May lead the technical development of operational components for first generation Lightspeed satellites and future Lightspeed generation programs
  • Manage development projects including collaboration with other operational staff;
  • Provide technical guidance to other staff
The successful candidate must possess (or be eligible to obtain) a CGP security clearance. Work is typically carried out during core business hours at HQD in an office environment. Some after hours work is required to support rehearsals, testing and emergency response. Some travel outside of Canada is required on occasion, as necessary.
