Your Mission👨‍🚀👩‍🚀

Bud works to create the world’s most compelling financial data products and we do this by working with enterprise & SME clients who integrate our platform through our suite of APIs. Backend software engineers make up almost 3/4 of Bud engineering and are spread across numerous different domain-focused product teams.

What is it like to be a Tech Lead at Bud?

Our backend tech leads lead are responsible for technical strategy and execution of their product teams. They also work together with other team tech leads and the Head of Engineering to define and execute the overall technical strategy and direction at Bud.

What impact will you make

  • Being the technical leader in their product team including being responsible for technical decisions & delivery, and working with the Product Manager on prioritisation, sprint planning and estimation
  • Mentoring more junior engineers and working closely with our Engineering Managers to help the progression of engineers in their team
  • Participating & leading technical forums that span engineering including our ‘Architecture Weekly’ sessions to help further technical development across the whole of Bud
  • Constantly looks at the team activity to proactively see how they can remove blockers and support & enable engineers to deliver business value while ensuring velocity and quality.
  • Acting as a representative of the team including regularly collaborating with our (commercial) tech delivery team, compliance department, and other product teams
  • Drives forward the technical quality & functionality of the Bud platform and seeks to push boundaries on what is possible

A bit about you

  • Proven experience with Go; and a great foundation with another programming language (e.g. Java, C, C++, Ruby, PHP or Python)
  • Comfortable leading a team of engineers including prioritisation and estimation of technical work, assessment of technical debt, and owning the technical vision for the team
  • Experience with MySQL or a similar relational database technology
  • Comfortable communicating complex ideas with ease and eloquence to non-experts and commercial teams within the business as well as with clients directly in calls or through written answers to questions
  • Considers and talks about the linkage between business value and technical implementation and can contextualise the team’s role within the larger company mission
  • Comfortable with good practices for observability of applications such as logging, metrics, and tracing
  • Experience with microservice / service-oriented architectures
  • An advocate for the application of site reliability engineering principles & practices within a product team
  • Able to lead & partake in complex technical incidents and coordinate a team’s response from triage to mitigation to resolution of a root cause
  • Comfortable being in an on call rota with our team

Taking it to the next level

These aren’t requirements, but are definitely a plus for any candidate!

  • Previous experience working in Financial Services / Fintech, particularly working with consumer or business banking transactional data
  • Experience with PHP, Typescript, or Python (the three other languages in use at Bud)
  • You’ve worked previously in close-proximity with Data Engineers, Machine Learning Engineers or Data Scientists (e.g. the same product team)
  • Experience with Docker and/or Kubernetes
  • Experience with other technologies used at Bud such as: RabbitMQ, Kafka, Redis, Cassandra, Prometheus, Grafana, Kibana, Elasticsearch, Jaeger tracing, Vault, Terraform, Helm, Jenkins, Tensorflow, Pytorch
  • In-depth understanding of the application of GDPR and other data protection & privacy regulations & frameworks
  • Experience working in a cloud environment such as Google Cloud Platform or AWS

Compensation 💰

We offer competitive salaries in line with industry benchmarks, set using extensive market data. We review salaries on an annual basis to make sure we continue to reward people well for their contributions at Bud. We have benchmarked this role between £90,000-£110,000.
