POSITION PURPOSE:
Provides environmental management and regulatory compliance expertise for North Wind Dynamics, LLC (NWD) including development and maintenance of the NWD Environmental Management System as required by DOE Order 436.1. Develops and maintains programs to ensure NWD’s compliance with all environmental and waste management regulatory requirements including the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Interfaces with DOE, U.S. EPA, and Ohio EPA on environmental matters. Serves as NWD’s Sustainability Coordinator. Demonstrates a personal commitment to safety and quality.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides environmental expertise for NWD activities.
- Provides technical and regulatory compliance expertise in environmental and waste management matters for NWD activities.
- Provides guidance to supervisors, employees and work planners to incorporate environmental protection objectives and requirements into work activities.
- Maintains technical knowledge and provides interpretation of applicable environmental and waste management codes, regulations, standards and DOE directives.
- Serves as a subject matter expert for the training organization to assist in developing compliant and effective environmental management training modules.
- Conducts assessments and inspections to ensure the effectiveness of environmental management programs and procedures.
- Verifies data and prepares DOE, U.S.EPA, and Ohio EPA required reports.
- Provides informal and formal training to workers on environmental issues as required.
- Performs and/or coordinates the performance of basic environmental monitoring as required.
- Performs NEPA analyses and environmental reviews on NWD proposed actions.
- Maintains records in accordance with NWD records-management policies.
- Responsible and accountable for Safety & Health performance and the communication of safety awareness.
- Maintains a safe working environment. Demonstrates awareness and implementation of applicable environmental, safety, and health (ES&H) requirements while also alerting co-workers of such requirements as needed.
- Ensures safety and health of employees during work tasks, utilizing good work practices and following procedures and protocols.
- Demonstrates ability to get along with co-workers, customers and visitors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Safety Responsibilities:
- Keep work area in order and free of hazards.
- Perform work within the controls identified and stop work when an unsafe work condition exists.
- Participate in safety programs and initiatives.
- Report all injuries.
- Participate in work planning so that hazards are identified and appropriate corrective actions are taken.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- A Bachelor’s Degree or greater in Environmental Management/Engineering or related field is preferred.
- Requires 3 – 5 years of experience in environmental compliance/management.
- Experience with implementation of DOE directives is preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret standards, regulations, technical references, etc.
- Ability to write formal reports and correspondence, and prepare routine and non-routine deliverables.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
Mathematics Skills:
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.
- Ability to apply concepts of algebra, calculus, geometry, and other mathematical principles.
- Ability to perform basic environmental science and engineering calculations (e.g., airborne concentrations, time-weighted averages, density, basic chemical conversion).
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
Other Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to operate a calculator, office copier, fax and computer.
Special Requirements:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE “L” clearance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to sit for part of the day. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and drive.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds or more.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must be capable of wearing standard personal protective equipment (hard hat, gloves, coveralls, safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety shoes) as needed.
- The employee must be able to pass a respirator physical successfully.
- Requires occasional travel and overnight stay.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Works mainly in typical office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
- Will often spend time in field assignments, etc., where noise level and environmental conditions may vary.
