Transylvania University (www.transy.edu), a top-tier, independent, residential liberal arts college of 1,000 students in Lexington, Kentucky, invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Teacher-Scholar – Data Analytics. This is a two-year appointment, beginning September 2, 2025. Transylvania University recognizes that a diverse and inclusive community is essential to the fulfillment of our mission as a liberal arts institution. To that end, we seek to attract diverse candidates from a variety of backgrounds. Candidates are encouraged, in their cover letter, to identify their strengths and experiences in creating an inclusive academic community.
Job Responsibilities:
The teacher-scholar will help our faculty continue to develop the newly established interdisciplinary Data Analytics minor. They will also receive mentoring in course development and pedagogy. Depending on the scholar’s strengths and interests, the candidate selected may create assignments suitable for beginning and advanced courses; find data that could be used for assignments ranging from class discussions to capstone projects; explore opportunities for projects and internships for Data Analytics students; and develop assessment methods that may include Jupyter Notebooks, Rmarkdown, or other applications. The scholar will (co)-teach one or more of the core courses of the minor with the opportunity to develop courses in their field using data-driven approaches.
Qualifications:
We are particularly interested in scholars whose research uses quantitative approaches to explore issues of social justice from interdisciplinary perspectives, including but not limited to environmental justice, minority health disparities, economic empowerment or other areas of social sciences. We prefer the successful candidate to have experience using the R platform. This position may be of particular interest to candidates seeking professional development in teaching or planning a career in which teaching will play a significant role. A terminal degree is required by the start date.
To begin the application process, submit your cover letter and one PDF that contains your curriculum vitae, your unofficial graduate transcripts, and a statement of teaching philosophy (upload this one PDF as your CV). Candidates are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in creating an inclusive academic community. If you are selected to move forward in the application process, you will be asked to provide official graduate transcripts and letters of recommendation at a later date. Send questions specific to this search to Dr. Michael Kelly, search committee chair, at mkelly@transy.edu. Review of applications will begin on December 15, 2024 and continue until an appointment is made.
