DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Government Affairs Team is focused on maintaining and fostering an excellent working relationship with all stakeholders in the surrounding Fenway neighborhood and City, State and Federal officials and agencies. We put an emphasis on being a good neighbor and a leading cultural institution within our community, while advancing the goals and promoting the interests of the Boston Red Sox and FSG Ownership Group. The Team works as part of the Red Sox and FSG Legal Department.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Government & Neighborhood Affairs Coordinator will support the organization’s dealings with government officials and agencies at all levels, particularly the City of Boston, and play an important role in cultivating and maintaining excellent relationships with residents, organizations, businesses and other key stakeholders in the Fenway neighborhood. This position will handle a variety of matters directly with City and other government agencies, such as license and permit applications for events at Fenway Park, communications with agencies regarding transportation and parking matters, and coordination of events and visits by the Mayor, City Council members, and other elected officials. This position will also play an important role communicating with the Red Sox’ local neighbors, planning and attending meetings and events at Fenway Park and in the area, working on strategic initiatives, and assisting with a wide array of administrative matters relating to Government & Neighborhood Affairs and also for the Legal Department.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Handle or assist with license and permit application filings with various government agencies, particularly with the City of Boston.
- Handle or assist with communications with Fenway residents and businesses, including the drafting of weekly update emails, responding promptly to calls and emails, sharing of informational notices, and attending various neighborhood meetings and events.
- Handle or assist with communications with various government agencies and officials, including scheduling and coordination of meetings, visits and events.
- Assist with government and neighborhood affairs issues relating to Fenway Park summer concerts, other special events (i.e., football and other sports), and other Fenway Park events (sometimes in evenings or on weekends).
- Handle or assist with visits by government officials, dignitaries and various special guests attending events at Fenway Park (sometimes in evenings or on weekends).
- Attend local neighborhood meetings hosted by City agencies and other organizations as needed (often held at night).
- Coordinate and execute neighborhood meetings, events and collaborations as needed (sometimes held in evenings or on weekends).
- Process requests from local non-profit and other organizations for support from the Red Sox and Red Sox Foundation.
- Assist with development and execution of new strategic initiatives, particularly relating to transportation and traffic issues and climate/green initiatives.
- Maintain and update records, including contacts lists and other Department information, and assist with various administrative matters, including business expense reports and ticket requests and orders, and other matters relating to Government & Neighborhood Affairs as well as for the Legal Department.
- Serve as a point of contact for the company’s document management system and assist with uploading and locating documents, creating matter numbers and related tasks.
CHARACTERISTICS / QUALIFICATIONS:
- College degree required.
- At least 1 to 2 full years of work experience strongly preferred.
- Government relations experience preferred but not required.
- Superb ability to interact well with others (Fenway residents, businesses, elected and other government officials) with complete professionalism and courtesy.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to present information and advocate for Red Sox proposals to government agencies and Fenway neighbors and to communicate internally.
- Excellent writing skills and graphic presentation skills (i.e., use of PowerPoint) strongly preferred.
- Strong organizational skills to keep track of deadlines, manage filings, administrative matters and other paperwork, and respond promptly to incoming calls and emails.
- Ability to work occasional nights, weekends, or holidays as required for attending meetings or greeting VIPs and Fenway area neighbors at Red Sox games and other events.
