Duolingo is looking for a language assessment scientist with the desire and ability to support validity and efficacy research. You will join the Duolingo English Test’s growing research team and contribute to the agile, ongoing research supporting our efforts to advance Duolingo’s mission through science. 

You Will...

  • Work with dedicated assessment scientists, engineers, and designers to bring ground-breaking assessment instruments to life
  • Collaborate on studies related to the validity and efficacy of the Duolingo English Test
  • Help to develop responsible AI standards and practices
  • Disseminate Duolingo English Test research findings through blogs, technical reports, conference presentations (LTRC, AAAL, LARC, etc.), and peer-reviewed journals (Language Testing, Applied Linguistics, Language Assessment Quarterly, etc.)

You Have...

  • Must have PhD in language testing, applied linguistics, educational measurement, or a related field
  • 2-3 years of work experience in an education-related field (academia or industry)
  • Must be proficient in R or Python to conduct data analysis
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication and organizational skills
  • Experience developing and/or conducting research on high-stakes language assessments, or other meaningful professional experience
  • Research expertise and publication/presentation record in the field of language assessment
  • Experience with large language models for content generation and a general knowledge of machine learning, natural language processing, and other technologies in language testing
  • Familiarity with standard language proficiency frameworks (CEFR preferred)
  • A desire to make the world a better place through technology
  • Ability to relocate to NYC or Pittsburgh, PA

Exceptional Candidates Will Have...

  • 5+ years of post-PhD experience working in an education-related field
  • Outstanding skills in R and Python to conduct data analysis
  • Relevant quantitative coursework and experience
  • Experience with the design and development of computer-adaptive tests
  • Proficiency in other programming languages

We post a multi-level salary range for all of our roles.

This is not inclusive of the rest of our awesome portfolio that includes equity compensation and world-class benefits. Our salary ranges are the same for all US locations. Your recruiter can share more details about the range for a specific level during the hiring process. The actual salary within the range is determined by many factors including but not limited to, skills, experience, education, and internal equity.

Salary Range:
$108,800$178,500 USD
